Even when running all counties or states associated with an applicant’s address history, there is still a chance that he or she has been convicted of a crime elsewhere in the country, possibly while traveling. This is why many employers elect to cast out a wider net by running our US Criminal Record Locator (USCRL), which searches records across the US--not only where the applicant has resided. Unlike some background screening companies, when a record is found in our USCRL, Info Cubic goes the extra step of processing a county search where the record was located in order to give our clients primary source information and not a partial result.
The USCRL is recommended as part of any comprehensive background screening package, regardless of company size or industry, because it develops additional jurisdictions where a crime may have occurred. These jurisdictions may not otherwise be included when conducting searches based on where your applicant has reportedly lived, worked, and/or attended to school.
Data found in the US Criminal Record Locator search comes from over 2,030 diverse sources, such as statewide repositories, local county information, federal entities, Department of Corrections, and Administration of Courts records.
2 - 4 hours
Since the USCRL functions as a locator tool, it is important to note that this search is not offered as a standalone check because information is not reported directly from the database. Instead, the originating jurisdiction of the potential record is searched real-time to ensure the information is accurate, up-to-date, complete and reportable, taking into account federal and state reporting limitations. The USCRL is also not a replacement for a Sex Offender Registry search. Consultation with a qualified legal counsel is recommended for all employment law matters.
The USCRL Plus Alias will also search the same records by alias names returned from the Social Security Number Trace, which is included in the USCRL Plus Alias at no additional cost.
Alias names are located through the Social Security Number Trace included in the USCRL Plus Alias; there is no need to have a separate Social Security Number Trace on the order if you order the USCRL Plus Alias search.
Clear: | Results will always appear as closed/clear. Any additional counties identified will be added to the order and processed through the primary source. |
Missing Information: | Information/documentation required to proceed has not been provided. Info Cubic can reach out to you for assistance or to the candidate directly using our Applicant Connect product. Call us at 1-888-925-0922 for more information. |

Q: Are records ever reported in these searches?
A: No. This search is used only as a record locater. Any records found will be reported elsewhere on your report, either in a county or statewide search. If that specific location is not already included in your order, a county level (or statewide, depending on best source and ordering guidelines) will be added in order to report the record. These searches will always be completed as Clear.
Q: What do you do after you find a criminal record in the database?
A: Once a “hit” is identified, Info Cubic sends researchers to the county where the USCRL shows a possible record to obtain:
• Additional identifiers to confirm it belongs to the individual
• Complete and up-to-date case information including disposition, status, case details.
Q: Is the US Criminal Record Locator the same as a Federal Criminal Search?
A: No, US Criminal Record Locator covers a collection of nationwide databases, while a Federal search specifically finds criminal records in Federal jurisdictions.
Q: Do I still need to run county searches even if I run a US Criminal Record Locator?
A: The US Criminal Record Locator searches 1,800 databases covering approximately 900 million records.
However, the “hits” are often not up-to-date or complete and is only used for pointer purposes. A county-level search would always be required to obtain complete and accurate information.
