On January 1, 2018, an updated DOT drug panel went into effect. The new panel tests for semi-synthetic opioids, which harmonizes with the Health and Human Services (HHS) guidelines. Testing for these additional drugs is to help stay active with the opioid outbreak.

DOT Physicals

This type of physical complies with 49 CFR 391.41. If employee successfully pass’s physical, a 2-year Medical Examiner’s Certificate will be supplied.

DOT Urine Test

This is a lab-based drug test that complies to DOT standards. Specimens are tested under the new DOT drug panel that includes expanded opiates.

DOT Employment Verification

Employment verification and accident history verification while in safety sensitive position covers 3 years. This complies with 49 CFR Part 40 section 40.25 and Part 391.23.

DOT Breath Alcohol

This test is completed at collection site by a certified technician. Employee would breath into a DOT approved breathalyzer device and receive results within minutes.

Random Single Pool (Mid to Large Businesses)

Employee selections are pulled using a DOT approved computerized generated random numbering system.

Random Testing

Random drug testing is required under the DOT, and we offer a statistically valid, computer generated, random selection process that is fair, equitable and confidential.

Selections are made using the following process:

  • Assign each individual enrollee a system generated random number
  • Mix up all of the numbers for a specific pool
  • Choose a starting point for selecting the first individual
  • Repeat that process until correct number of selections have been made
  • All SSNs are masked on random selection reports for security

Q: Who is required to get DOT drug tests?

A: These are some of the DOT departments with safety-sensitive positions:

  • Federal Aviation Administration: Flight crews, flight attendants, aircraft dispatchers, ground security coordinators, etc.
  • Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration: Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) holders who operate Commercial Motor Vehicles (CMVs), vehicles that carry 16 passengers or more (including the driver), or vehicles that transport hazardous materials and are required to display a DOT placard.
  • U.S. Coast Guard: Crew members operating a commercial vessel.
  • Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration: Operations, maintenance, and emergency response workers.
  • Federal Transit Administration: Vehicle operators, controllers, mechanics, and armed security.

 

Q: What does DOT drug panel test for?

A: All DOT drug tests use the same 5-panel test. It tests for:

  • Marijuana metabolites/THC
  • Cocaine metabolites
  • Amphetamines (including methamphetamine, MDMA)
  • Opioids* (including codeine, heroin (6-AM), morphine, hydrocodone, oxycodone, hydromorphone, and oxymorphone)
  • Phencyclidine (PCP)

Although there are several options for drug tests, DOT regulated drug tests must use urine samples.

 

Q: When are Safety-sensitive employees required to complete a DOT drug test?

A: DOT drug tests are required in the following situations:

  • Pre-employment
  • If an employee is selected for random drug testing
  • If an employer has observed a behavior change and has reasonable suspicion of substance use
  • If an employee is returning to duty
  • If an employee is in a follow-up program with the employer
  • If an employee is in an accident at work
