The National Drug-Free Workplace Alliance is celebrating its 12th anniversary of National Drug-Free Work Week. This year, the week falls on October 15 – 20.

The organization was built by the United States Department of Labor, and its mission is to focus on how to improve the safety and health of employees within a wide range of industries.

Benefits of a Drug-Free Workplace

Info Cubic supports this mission by maintaining a drug-free workplace environment. We have a company-wide drug and alcohol use and abuse policy, which gives us the opportunity to educate our employees. We value maintaining a healthy workplace that keeps our employees safe.

Having a drug-free work environment also results in:

  • Increased employee moral
  • Increased employee work productivity
  • Low employee turnover
  • Decreased absenteeism
  • Compliance with company standards

Tips to Maintain a Drug-Free Workplace

As the flu season approaches, we like to remind our employees that over-the-counter cough syrups and any other medications with Dextromethorphan (DXM) may cause negative reactions when abused. Abuse of over-the-counter medications may cause effects on vision, hearing and alertness. Although over-the-counter medicines are legally available without a valid prescription, safety must still be a high priority, and it’s especially important to administer the drugs according to directions.

Our management teams have been trained to recognize warning signs or observed behaviors in the workplace. Not all signs are related to drug abuse – instead, they may be symptoms of a health condition. Some of the more common behaviors that can lead to further questioning are:

  • Decrease in work performance
  • Abrupt mood swings
  • Dramatic changes in appearance
  • Excessive over-the-counter medicine use
  • Personality instability
  • Failure to fulfill major work obligations
  • Dramatic changes in behavior
